           INTRODUCTION TO PORNOGRAPHY

   Aside from the fact it is not mentioned in the Constitution, Pornography is very like guns as a subject of political debate in this country. To some, it is instrumentality of absolute evil, destroying individuals and families, while to others, Pornography is not only neutal but mild, an instrument of growth and self expression and a constitutionally protected right.

       Professor Catherine Mackinnon, in her thought-provoking book only words, made the point that it is hard to get an objective judgement on pornography in a world where doubtless at least some judges are pornographic users.

       There is an easy way to solve this problem; let's go one step further and eliminate the term we are trying to define. There is really no such thing as pornography. There are only explicit descriptions and depictions of sex.

   Some of these are scientific, literary or artistic, and some are not "pornography" is a derogatory term we use to single out some category; for some, "pornography" means the most obscene and immoral material; for others it may mean the most arousing and enjoyable . The real issue is wether the explicit description or depiction of sex should ever be illegal.

                  MEANING OF PORNOGRAPHY

 "PORNOGRAPHY" refers to printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement.

 A history of pornography is nearly impossible to concieve, imagery that might be considered erotic or even religious, in one society may be considered as pornographic in another. This European travellers to India in the 19th century were horrified by what they considered pornography by representations of sexual contact and intercourse on Hindu temple.
 Apart from it's sexual element, pornography became a powerful vehicle for social and political protest. It provided a vehicle for exploration of daring ideas that were condemned by both church and state.
   Including sexual freedom for women as well as for men and the practice of contraception and abortion.

                EFFECTS OF PORNOGRAPHY

                        * Effect of the mind*
   Pornography significantly distorts attitudes and perceptions about the nature of sexual intercourse. Men who habitually look at pornography have a higher tolerance for abnormal sexual behaviours, sexual aggression, promiscuity, and even rape. In addition, men begin to view women and even children as "sex object commodities or instruments for their pleasure, not as persons with their own inherent dignity.

                        * Effect on the body*
   Pornography is very addictive. The addictive aspect of pornography has a biological substrate, with dopamine homone release acting as one of the mechanism for forming the transmission pathway to pleasure centers of the brain. Also the increased sexual permissiveness engendered by pornography increases the risk of contracting a sexual transmitted disease.

                        * Effect on the heart*
    Pornography affects people's emotional lives. Married men who are involved in pornography feel less satisfied with their marital sexual relations and less emotionally attached to their wives.

         Women married to men with a pornography addiction report feelings of betrayal, mistrust, and anger.
             Pornographic use may lead to infidelity and even divorce. Adolescents who view pornography feel shame, diminished self-confidence, and sexual incertainty.
